Chapter 6

Core Positioning and Breathing

What did you think about Test One on breathing in Chapter 5? Was this test awkward to perform? Did you wonder why breathing is the first test in a core book? Most people think of a sit-up or a plank as the best tests to assess their core, but it is much deeper than this. Your core’s position, body’s posture, and the way you breathe have a direct influence on your ability to activate and stabilize through your core when you are running.

Start with respiration or breathing—this is your lifeline. Breathing is how you get oxygen, vital to living, into the cells of your body and also expel carbon dioxide, which is harmful to you. Oxygen is essential for cell function. It is used in the production of energy in order for your body to do work. When a higher demand is placed on the body, such as running, more oxygen is required. So to do this, you need to increase the rate at which you are breathing and also maximize the volume of air exchange on each breath.

Think about the last time you were running and began to fatigue. Your breathing became more labored. This is natural. As your fitness improves, the point at which you fatigue is delayed until later in your run or at faster paces. But what if you could do more to delay fatigue? Because breathing is directly tied to fatigue, let’s focus on this.
